The Importance of Database Management

Database Management: most Important Aspects

Databases are collections of information that relate to creating meaning in a computational context. Operated by Database Management Systems (SGBDs) such as Oracle, MySQL, SQL and PostgreSQL, the BDs are the basis for most applications used by companies such as CRM, ERP, SCM, Service Desk or any solution that is based on a set of information that can be crossed, analyzed, filtered or have a specific goal for storage.

Maintain a database with updated information is determinant for the assertiveness of the processes of a company. In addition, other operating problems need to be observed to achieve a high level of competitiveness. Problems such as lack of hardware and software features, defining and implementing a backup strategy, the absence of a specific professional (DBA), lack of maintenance and tracking metrics undermine the companies’ processes and impact virtually all areas.

The monitoring/database management is vital to control these problems. Apart from identifying them, you need to find out what the root cause of these problems is in order to deal with or anticipate them already in a more advanced process of IT governance. In our experience as a manufacturer of software for IT management, the database has always been one of the main demands, mainly for affecting most organizational processes. Once this becomes a problem, it can generate years of pain for business managers who do not have well defined tracking metrics and processes / methodologies.

Monitoring database with OpMon

OpServices has a decade of experience in monitoring database by means of OpMon. Besides the possibility of creating service catalogs, where it is possible to discover the processes and services affected by any outage in the database, we see in the dashboards business (read about OpMon Dashboards) a way to transform data that was previously unique to the IT field in data used by business decision makers for decision making. In this case, a vision of how the problems originated in a BD can impact revenue, for example. If the managers know well these processes, of course.

As for the sphere of business opportunities, the analysis of large volumes of raw data (Big Data) is an opportunity to solve a lot of problems in scale. Big Data is a subject that has become the agenda of any list of trends in information technology for years to come. It is based on the methodology of the 5 Vs: velocity, volume, variety, veracity and value. A proper management of the database directly impacts all of these items. Professionals who see this opportunity certainly add much value to the business of their company.
